I cannot emphasize how important it is to be honest with your attorney. This applies to any type of legal case whether it is a divorce, general civil lawsuit, contract negotiation, business dispute, or even estate planning. Your attorney can only advise you knowledgeably about your situation if you have shared the full story. Your attorney is not there to judge you but is on your side. In order to really help you and to help you get full benefit from this relationship the facts need to be known. Even if there is something that you are upset or ashamed of you should still share that with your lawyer. Remember no one is perfect and and your attorney will not expect perfection of you. We are all human and sometimes stress anger or exhaustion gets the best of us and we say or do things that we later wish we had not. But in planning legal strategy or deciding the best thing for you or your family’s future your lawyer needs all the facts. This is especially important if you are going to court. It is never a good idea for your lawyer to get a surprise at court in front of the judge when you could have prevented that. Always be honest even if it is not easy to do so
